Sumario: | En estado de memoria by Tununa Mercado is a text resisting any
genre classification. Though it could be included within the autobiographical genre,
the author’s reflections on writing, memory and exile open he possibility of going
beyond the borders of the unavoidable self-reference. In fact, Tununa Mercado, on
the one hand, simultaneously asserts and challenges the Cartesian cogito ergo sum,
and, on the other, the representative capacity of language. The writer questions
identity when presenting an “I” that, far from erasing or obliterating itself, looses itself
in the search for self-acknowledgment. When doing so, it penetrates into memory’s
dark regions, and paradoxically, finds itself in a language incapable of representing it
and in various figurations of otherness.
