Sumario:Education plays a central role in the development of economies. Usually, it is considered as an investment in human capital, which is an important factor for growth. On the other hand, it has been indicated that, in developing countries, micro and small firms are the drivers of the economy. These firms create jobs, innovate, and increase wealth. However, this relationship is much more complex. For example, a large number of micro and small firms in an economy might be indicating barriers and shortcomings in the private sector for the creation of wage jobs. The allocation of the workers could be such that the smaller firms arise as a choice of the less qualified workers to be able to subsist economically (i.e., workers with lower educational level or lower human capital). In this case, the returns gap between wage-employees and entrepreneurs would be unfavorable to the latter. Therefore high levels of entrepreneurs will be correlated with lower productivity, slow economic growth, and poor development. The above hypothesis is the main incentive for our research. We will analyze whether there is a relationship between educational levels and the degree of development of micro and small firms between countries. In particular, we will examine whether there are, in developing countries, specific patterns between educational levels and the characteristics of these enterprises (micro and small firms) that could show a slight role of this private sector to the contribution to economic development.
