Descripción
Sumario:El Tiempo diablo del Santo Guayama, a novel by Mendocinian writer Rolando Concatti, is considered a historical novel, a literary genre that is still the subject of irreconcilable controversy. This paper shows some of the author’s narrative strategies, in order to elucidate the two aspects that shape up the text: history and fiction—the historical elements validated by historiographical records, on one hand, and the fictional construction, on the other. Starting with a discussion of the literary category “historical novel" and of Alessandro Manzoni’s ideas, the work develops an analysis of Concatti’s text in its discursive aspect (structure, modalization, and style) and delineates the author's position regarding the problem that this category raises. In particular, the focus is placed on his incorporation of popular memory as a counterpoint to the official History, and on his use of multiple voices and perspectives.
