Sumario:Chloroquine is a drug used for the treatment of various infections such as malaria and inflammatory rheumatic diseases. Before the COVID-19 outbreak, chloroquine antiviral activity had been reported against various families of viruses and particularly some coronaviruses. Due to all of these antecedents, chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine were positioned as promising drugs for the treatment of COVID-19. In this article, we review the aforementioned background and the latest advances in clinical trials registered by the World Health Organization.
