Sumario:Physical properties of metallic and insulator surfaces will be studied through their interaction with fast (keV) ions and electrons on grazing and penetrating trajectories. Experiments will be performed under ultra high vacuum conditions, and emitted electrons will be analysed in both energy and angle of ejection, as well as the energy lost by the projectile ion and its final charge state. We will measure the elastic dispersion of heavy ions in high purity flat metallic and insulator surfaces. The stopping of ions in the neighborhood of the surface and in the bulk of the solid will be performed, in order to identify the basic mechanisms of energy loss. The emitted electron distribution when the surface is bombarded with grazing ions and electrons will be measured and results compared with models in order to asses the effects of dynamic polarization of the surface electrons and the ionization track of charges in the case of insulator surfaces.
