Sumario: | Círculo de Lectores, book club from Spain, has developed –since its creation in
1962 and, particularly, under direction of Hans Meinke between 1981 and 1997–
a cultural project based on the quality edition of referent works, as well as social
projection of its activity through lectures and exhibitions. Thus, Meinke formed
around him a network of artists, writers and intellectuals, which made him
become one of the most important cultural mediators of Spain in the second half
of 20 century. As a consequence of understanding culture as a permanent
interchange between its disciplines, the fulfilment of illustrated editions was one
of the pillars of his cultural politics. Inside this area, the painter Antonio Saura was
his most important contributor, not only making projects, but also advising
Meinke in possible editions and recommending other illustrators. Saura illustrated
for Círculo de Lectores the so called “books of his life”, in which the figure of
Ramón Gómez de la Serna is an unavoidable reference, being his book Ismos
(1931, 1943) one of the lectures that caused the artistic vocation of the painter.
The study of social, circulation and appropriation conditions in Flor nueva de
greguerías (1989) will serve as an example for the process of gestation of projects
and interaction of these networks between art and edition. |
