Sumario:A method for the rapid determination of soil moisture, based in the calcium carbid-water reaction, and a simple presiometric apparatus is described. The following mail modifications to former procedures are introduced: 1º- When the soil is very moist and/or of a clayish nature, the weighed sample is mixed in a mortar with ground quartz before carrying on with the moisture determination. 2º- The Bourdon gauge used is periodically checked against a mercurial manometer. The pressure values are corrected at 20ºC. 3º- To the water actually determined, expressed as moisture percentage in dry soil basis, the following correction values are added: 0.75% for sandy up to loamy soils and 2.11% for soil with heavier textures. The textures are organoleptically appreciated. With the procedure here proposed the reaction goes faster and more complete and the texture influence upon the amount of non reactionable water is taken into account. So the method reaches a satisfactory degree of accuracy and reproductibility.
