Sumario: | This study carried out in Extremo (Portugal) has four objectives: to characterize its fortified landscape from an archaeological point of view, to enhance the cultural value of this landscape, to initiate a heritage process, and to test a model of cultural heritage governance. This process saw the joint intervention of a research structure, a municipal body, and society at large. Another aim was to test the theoretical and methodological models that have been used in other parts of the Galician–Portuguese border and to confirm the effectiveness of a participatory governance process here. The joint work resulted in the construction of a cultural heritage identity based on elements of an essential part of Portugal’s history, which used audio-visual resources and community participation. The results help understand how heritage processes contribute to the construction of collective identities. |
