(about 1–1500 A.D.). The paper considers the quantity, function, visual representations, and size of the vessels, as well as architectural and contextual evidence, from the archaeological sites Morro del Fraile, El Carmen 1, and El Carmen 2. The presence of large pots and jars next to large hearths in semi-open spaces, which is the case at the Morro del Fraile rock shelter and El Carmen 1 enclosure 1-2, could suggest these were contexts for preparing food and/or drink for more people than those who resided there on a daily basis. This possibility is supported by the large number of serving vessels identified in Morro del Fraile enclosure 1 and in El Carmen 2 enclosure 2 and the predominance of serving vessels with visual representations in all of these contexts. The presence of serving vessels, mostly without visual representations, in a roofed enclosure with a small hearth, as in El Carmen 1 enclosure 13, or next to a large pot, as in El Carmen 1 enclosure 11, suggests these spaces were either for daily domestic consumption or processing food and/or drink to be consumed in an extra-domestic communal context. El objetivo del presente trabajo es comprender los contextos de uso de vasijas recuperadas en espacios residenciales del sector centro-occidental del valle de Santa María (Catamarca-Tucumán) durante el primer y segundo milenio d.C. (ca. 0-1500 d.C.). Se consideran la cantidad, la función, las representaciones visuales y el tamaño de las vasijas de los sitios arqueológicos Morro del Fraile, El Carmen 1 y El Carmen 2, así como las evidencias arquitectónicas y contextuales. La presencia de grandes ollas y tinajas junto a fogones amplios en espacios semiabiertos, como ocurre en el alero de Morro del Fraile y en el recinto 1-2 de El Carmen 1, podría indicar contextos de elaboración de comidas y/o bebidas que incluyeran a una mayor cantidad de personas que las que allí residían diariamente. En el mismo sentido podría considerarse la gran cantidad de vasijas de servicio identificadas en el recinto 1 de Morro del Fraile y en el recinto 2 de El Carmen 2 y el predominio de vasijas de servicio con representaciones visuales en todos ellos. La presencia de vasijas de servicio, en su mayoría, sin representaciones visuales en un recinto techado con un fogón pequeño, como ocurre en el recinto 13 de El Carmen 1, o junto a una olla de gran tamaño, como ocurre en el recinto 11 de El Carmen 1, pueden ser vistas ya sea como espacios de consumo domésticos utilizados diariamente o como espacios de procesamiento de bebidas y/o comidas para ser consumidas en un contexto comunal extra-doméstico.
