This process is evidence of a people that, strengthened in its right to self-government, was shaping a sovereignty that did not contradict its will to avoid the risk of disintegration. The question is, under what terms and under what conditions. In order to answer this question, throughout this paper we delve into the political and economic foundations guiding to four decisive instances: the recognition of the Primera Junta; the representation in the Junta Grande; the mandate to the representative to the Asamblea del año XIII, and the segregation of the governorship of Cuyo. For its analysis we resorted to varied published documentary sources, as well as to unpublished documentation from the General Archive of the Nation. From their interpretation we verify the material demands that conditioned it, as well as the aspirations of self-government that sustained it. El trabajo aborda la dinámica territorial de la ciudad de San Luis entre su incorporación al proceso revolucionario rioplatense y la configuración de la provincia del mismo nombre a principios de 1820. Tal proceso da muestras de un pueblo que, afianzado en su derecho al autogobierno fue configurando una soberanía que no contradecía su voluntad de evitar el riesgo de disgregación. La pregunta es, bajo qué términos y en qué condiciones. A fin de responder a estos interrogantes profundizamos en los fundamentos políticos y económicos que lo guiaron en cuatro instancias decisivas: el reconocimiento de la Primera Junta; la representación en la Junta Grande; el mandato al representante a la Asamblea del año XIII y la segregación de la gobernación de Cuyo. Para su análisis recurrimos a variadas fuentes documentales éditas, así como a documentación inédita proveniente del Archivo General de la Nación. A partir de su interpretación verificamos las exigencias materiales que lo condicionaron, así como las aspiraciones de autogobierno que lo sustentaron. Instituto de Historia Americana y Argentina.
