This paper explores theoretical and methodological aspects of biogeography and their applications in archaeology. We review concepts, objectives, classification systems, historical development and relationships with other sciences as well as a brief description applications of biogeography in local archaeological research.We conclude that in the study of human distribution, human biogeography involves the interaction of complementary factors. Historic dispersal is the most adequate perspective to explain processes of human distribution because of scale and theoretical affinity. Local biogeographic approaches that explain processes ofhuman distribution with spatial models have had the greatest impact on impact in local archaeology. A partir de la década de 1970 se observó un auge en el desarrollo de enfoques biogeográficos aplicados a la interpretación de fenómenos humanos. En búsqueda de argumentos biogeográficos en el discurso arqueológico en este trabajo se examinan aspectos teóricos y metodológicos de la Biogeografía como ciencia. Realizamos una revisión de conceptos, objetivos, clasificación, desarrollo histórico y relaciones con otras ciencias. También, una breve descripción de líneas de aplicación de la Biogeografía en trabajos arqueológicos locales.Concluimos que la perspectiva de la biogeografía humana en el estudio de procesos de distribución humana durante el pasado implicó la interacción de factores complementarios. El dispersalismo histórico ha resultado la perspectiva más adecuada para explicar procesos de distribución humana por razones de escala y afinidad teórica. Los enfoques biogeográficos para explicar procesos de distribución humana a partir de modelos de utilización del espacio han sido los de mayor impacto en la arqueología local.
