Sumario:We show the value of biographical studies to understand the ways of being subjects in communities of diverse tolerance towards homoerotic practices. The text deals with the constitution of imaginary communities from the intervention resulting from: ethnographic work in indigenous communities; media participation; the interference of NGOs on the Zapotec community, especially in Juchitán, a land of sexual tolerance towards the muxes. The muxes fulfill various social and cultural tasks, they are men who have homoerotic practices with other men that neither they nor the social group considers homosexual. The Zapotecs are part of the original groups of southern Mexico, have a strong presence in the country as a whole, develop practices of broad participation of women, so that some social scientists have called it a matriarchal culture. In this document, six issues about the region are addressed, based on arguments generated by a member of wide recognition in the Juchitán region: 1) the assessment of the role of women when considering that it is a group with matriarchal practices; 2) the myth of the paradise of left wing governments; 3) the myth of the gay paradise; 4) the idea of a third sex; 5) the idea of general acceptance of the muxes; 6) the generalization of cross-dressing. Finally, some effects of the intervention of social scientists, the mass media and NGOs on the professionalization of the people raised to respond to the diversity of interests of those outside the community.
