In the context of the rise of fascism and totalitarian regimes in Europe and the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, European intellectuals were impelled to redefine their place, and through the thirties’ the ideology of the writer as clerc began to be substituted by that of the committed writer. At this polemic stage, Alfonso Reyes reads his "Notes on American intelligence"–, where he stands for the cultural parity of America and Europe and inagurates a critical reflection on the intelectual in a society coming from a colonial experience. This work traces the intellectual networks and conceptual continuities in the work of Reyes aiming to illuminate the reading of the essay. En 1936 se realizan en Buenos el XIV Congreso Internacional del los PEN Clubs y la Séptima Conversación de la Organización de Cooperación Intelectual. En el contexto del avance del fascismo y de los regimenes totalitarios en Europa y el estallido de la Guerra Civil Española, los intelectuales europeos redefinen su lugar y a lo largo de la década del treinta la ideología del escritor como clerc comienza a ser sustituida por la del escritor comprometido. En este escenario polémico, Alfonso Reyes lee sus "•Notas sobre la inteligencia americana"–, donde establece la paridad de América con Europa y funda la reflexión crítica sobre el letrado en una sociedad proveniente de la experiencia colonial. Este trabajo se propone trazar las redes intelectuales y las continuidades conceptuales en la obra de Reyes que iluminan la lectura de este ensayo.
