Sumario:The objective of this article is to analyze, from a gender perspective, the construction process of the social stigma of the prostitute in the city of Cuenca-Ecuador, its differentiated effects on the lives of women and the resistance mechanisms used by them to lessen or counteract it. The study, the first to address the issue of prostitution in the city from a gender perspective, was carried out over two years and used an ethnographic method and a qualitative approach. The preferred technique for gathering information was in-depth interviews with the women who practiced prostitution in Cuenca. The results show that the stigma of the prostitute is created through the construction of imaginaries, the production of discourses, the delimitation and the gendering of spaces as well as the control over women's bodies and the exercise of their sexuality, whereby stigma becomes a social regulator.
