Sumario:Mexico is an active territory in the autonomic struggles for self-government. It is a consolidated trend that has won rights at electoral courts, since 2011. In the last decade six indigenous municipalities that have won the right to choose their municipal authority through their Own Normative System: Cherán, Michoacán (2012); Ayutla de los Libres, Guerrero (2019); Oxchuc, Chiapas (2019); and three in the state of Morelos in 2021: San Miguel Peras; La Trinidad Vista Hermosa, and Magdalena Yodocono de Porfirio Díaz. In addition to the 417 municipalities in the state of Oaxaca, that already elect their municipal representatives without political parties. This contribution analyzes the case of the municipality of Oxchuc, Chiapas, which in 2017 obtained a ruling in favor to elect its municipal authorities without political parties, and successfully elected them in 2019, but it that was not the case in 2021. It describes the difficulties faced by its electoral authority to conduct the process, as well as the performance of the General Community Assembly to renew its Town Council for the 2022-2024 period. It reflects in general on the challenges that this municipality has faced to consolidate its autonomous process.
