Sumario: | Four different emperors were proclaimed at the same time by the end of 2nd Century in Rome. The context was linked to the structural crisis in which DidioJuliano had been promoted by the Pretorian Guard, Clodio Albino supported by the legion of Britain, Pesenio Niger by the ones from Asia, and finally SeptimioSevero promoted by the legions of Panonia. This described situation collapsed into a civil war between 193 and 197, having SeptimioSevero as the ultimate victorious general.
Modern Historiography has considered this access to the throne as mere opportunism of a political crisis. That is why within these pages I revise his figure together with different academic considerations about it. In particular, I analyze the antagonist model of virtusand tyche provided by Herodiano, who wrote his biography while he was still an emperor. I believe that both perspectives would let me begin to clarify partial image analyze by modern scholars. |
