At the same time, he entered the literary field by writing–in the first moment–novels, to later dedicate himself definitively to the theater, beginning with the premiere of the play Trescientos millones (1932). The resounding change in Roberto Arlt's work from the novel to the play has received numerous explanations from critics. However, his production as a journalist has not received the necessary attention in understanding the plot of continuities. We maintain that the background of his dramaturgy must be sought, not only in his novelistic work, but also in his chronicles. In this article, we will be able to demonstrate that theatrical language, as a mediating code, is present as theme, writing and metaphor in Arlt the journalist and recedes Roberto the playwright. The problem that we pose, centered on the narrative/drama modal tension, is part of the field of Comparative Literature (Guillén, 1985), and we address this interaction from a set of theoretical postulates from the semiotics of culture (Lotman, 2000) and dramatology (García Barrientos, 2001). La carrera periodística de Roberto Arlt se afianza hacia 1928 cuando asume la responsabilidad de escribir diariamente en la sección "Aguafuertes porteñas" de El Mundo. Paralelamente, ingresa al campo literario escribiendo –en un primer momento– novelas, para dedicarse luego de manera definitiva al teatro, inicio marcado por el estreno de la obra Trescientos millones (1932). El cambio rotundo en la obra de Roberto Arlt desde la narrativa de largo aliento al género dramático ha recibido numerosas explicaciones por parte de la crítica. Sin embargo, su producción como periodista no ha contado con la necesaria atención en cuanto a la comprensión de esta trama de continuidades. Sostenemos que los antecedentes de su dramaturgia deben buscarse no solo en su obra novelística, sino también en sus crónicas. En el presente artículo, podremos demostrar que el lenguaje teatral, en calidad de código mediador, está presente como tema, escritura y metáfora en el Arlt cronista y precede al Roberto dramaturgo. La problemática que planteamos, centrada en la tensión modal narración/drama, se inscribe en el ámbito de la Literatura Comparada (Guillén, 1985), interacción que abordamos a partir de un conjunto de postulados teóricos provenientes de la Semiótica de la Cultura (Lotman, 2000) y la dramatología (García Barrientos, 2001).
