This paper gathers, in the first place, the comparative arguments exposed by the exiled author in the essay, as well as his ideas about the figure of Don Juan. It also offers a study of the changes between the different versions, comparing those published in Spain in 1964 and 1967 with that published in Mexico in 1965; and, finally, it follows the editorial efforts (some failed) for publication through Max Aub’s collected letters. Max Aub publicó a mediados de los años sesenta, tanto en España como en México, un ensayo literario intitulado "Hércules y Don Juan". En él, el autor ofrece una visión comparatista entre ambas figuras y sostiene la hipótesis de que Hércules es el antecedente del burlador sevillano. El presente trabajo recoge, en primer lugar, los argumentos comparativos expuestos por el autor exiliado en el ensayo, así como sus ideas acerca de la figura de Don Juan; ofrece un estudio de los cambios entre las distintas versiones, al confrontar las publicadas en España en 1964 y 1967 con la publicada en México en 1965 y, finalmente, resigue las gestiones editoriales (algunas fallidas) para su publicación a través del epistolario de Max Aub.
