Sumario: | This article shows the results of a study of interrogative forms that do not seek information, a frequent and varied resource in conversations among young people. Our purpose is to offer a characterization of these questions focusing on their functional value in the context in which they occur. Our initial hypothesis was that there was a common factor between these structures and ironies that are characterized as ‘pretence’ (Recanati 2004, Currie 2006), since in both cases the speaker puts on display a state of understanding that is not the one he/she really possesses. The corpus belongs to the group ECAr (Colloquial Spanish from Argentina) that includes 60 conversations among university students between the ages of 18 and 28, recorded and/or videotaped. A qualitative study was carried out that included interpretation and classification techniques. The results allowed us to verify that, although there are instances in which questions have an ironic purpose, they are not that frequent in our data. We found a significant number of interrogative clauses that intend to negotiate and consolidate shared understanding which starts from checking the different degrees of understanding. In other cases, these utterances orient part of the message in a projective way introducing new informative elements in the unfolding of the exchange. |
