Sumario:The aim of this article was to interpret the social implications of the binary narrative for the main participants in the armed conflict of the Tierra Caliente region (Michoacán), analyzed by applying the methodology of cultural sociology, with reference to motives, relationships and institutions.The binary narrative concerning armed conflict reinforced various collective beliefs about public insecurity resulting from alleged weakness on the part of state public security institutions; permitting a consequent increase in insecurity, caused exclusively by Mexican criminal groups.
